On Valentine’s Day we talk about Love- and yes, it’s in every Slovenian- even in the new vodka, Slovenia Vodka, ready for debut on the US Market.
Slovenia Vodka, made from buckwheat and Alpine spring water, is the newest innovation in the spirits market to hit the USA. The makers of this specialty vodka announced that actor Bill Murray and the great Mikhail Baryshnikov will join Chef Peter X Kelly in launching SLOVENIA VODKA® in the United States in April 2013.
According to the press release, “Chef Kelly is well known in Slovenia since a 2009 visit when he fell in love with the country’s many charms, and has since sought ways to bring the warmth, culture, and unspoiled beauty of Slovenia to America.” He owns four restaurants in New York City, and ‘X20,’ the flagship, is furnished with custom designed chairs produced in Slovenia.
He uses many Slovenian traditional products in his food preparation including the ‘Soline Fleur de Sel’ salt, Slovenian olive oil, and Kocbek pumpkin seed oils. He also serves fine Slovenian wines. Participants in our food tour, Taste of Slovenia will visit the salt pans (soline) at the Slovenian seaside where the salt is produced, and visit the olive groves to sample fine Slovenian olive oil. Many more culinary experiences are planned. Pumpkin seed oil is produced in the Slovenian Northeast region bordering on Hungary.

And on Valentine’s Day, we send you three hearts, the logo of the most famous Slovenian mineral water, Radenska, from the famous thermal spa of the same name. Mineral waters have been used in Slovenia for hundreds of years for their healing properties.
About SLOVENIA VODKA® Chef Kelly has said, “Not only does this crafted vodka contain a whisper of Slovenian buckwheat and water from the foot of the Slovenian Alps, but even more uniquely, it contains the LOVE that is a part of the very name SLOVENIA.”
Buckwheat, Ajda, came to Slovenia in the Middle Ages, continues to be a popular traditional food and plays a major role in many contemporary dishes. Buckwheat contains no gluten and is safe for celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity. The Carnolian Bee, apis mellifera carnica, a native bee of Slovenia, favors Buckwheat to produce its honey.
